Bits With A Bite
December 19, 2011

Last weekend the seventh edition of Deshima Sounds was held in de Bazart, The Hague. It was a lot of fun, and that was all made possible by the awesome crowd. I love you guys. Here’s what my experience was – with a few extras.
I started off by playing the latest Genki Rockets album, No Border Between Us (highly recommended!). After that, time for some eurobeat. I mixed it on the fly, and I didn’t even rehearse it before playing. Surprisingly though, it went really, really good. Neodash has a recording of it, and I’m anxious to hear it.
Neodash played some of his tunes next, after which I gave you guys a house music set. Funky, soulful and of course Japanese house music just to get in the right mood for some serious partying. At this time I came to the conclusion that just one Deshima Sounds party isn’t enough, as there are so many cool songs I want to let people shake their asses to.
After an intermezzo by Neodash (again, yes), I played one of the awesomest sets ever. I called it ‘Game’, but it was actually a Dance Dance Revolution set. Short samples of all the popular DDR songs put together, playing the crowd through three stages, and they even passed the extra stage! I uploaded this set to SoundCloud, so if you missed it or want to listen to it again – be my guest!
Afterwards Neodash played some Korean house music, and Dnstje pulled off a supercool laser show. It had moving images and cool wave effects. The guy is awesome with this stuff! Can’t wait to see a video of it!
One of the two Eindbaas deejays was up next; KLA. All of a sudden, happy 8bit sounds everywhere. Usually, I’m not the 8bit guy, but this stuff was so happy and upbeat, even I couldn’t stop dancing. I would love to hear her play again.
Up next, me again. This time with more eurobeat music. Halfway I even switched to Super Euro Christmas (SEX’mas), to get in the Christmas mood. Songs like All I Want For Christmas by Cherry, Happy Xmas Merry Xmas by Dave Rodgers and Domino and of course my all-time favorite Christmas eurobeat song, Holy X’Mas Night by Ace and the Brubell Choir.
Neodash played some techno and hardstyle tracks, and Eindbaas had another go. Once again, cool stuff! And inbetween those two sets Lisa Emonts, who won a prize at Nishicon, got her Anime Music Video shown; Titanium.
My turn again. This time it was about club house music. I started off with some Banvox tracks (the guy totally rocks), which were pumping. I don’t even remember exactly what I played, I only remember the crowd going wild. And that’s what it’s all about, right?
Neodash going for some Japanese hardcore next, and Eindbaas playing their final set. Afterwards, they sadly had to rush home, but it was my time to wobble on. With dubstep. Yes. Wobble wobble wob. Ajapai and JaQwa were some of the artists whose tracks I played, with of course the Deshima Sounds Bits With A Bite theme song made by JaQwa and USK. Listen below!
It was also my finisher move. Neodash killed the crowd with his superspeedmegafasthardcore set as a final stage. I can look back at this edition of Deshima Sounds with a big smile on my face. Even though not everything went all okay on the technical side, the crowd didn’t really notice anything (until the text message service got all messed up), it was a great time we all had at Deshima Sounds.
Can’t wait until next time!
Oh, and of course a big shout out to all the party people, and to Feb, Jimi, Neodash, Dnstje, Eindbaas, de Bazart tech people and Vien in particular! You’re the best!
